Summer School
"Street Design for Urban Qualities and Mobility"
The program is aimed to train a new generation of Ukrainian transport planners and urban planners in their work with contemporary principles of street space design that should improve urban streets to places where people move, meet and live. Orginised together with Kyiv Cyclists' Association and Kyiv City State Administration.

Context
Main streets in Kyiv today are mainly considered as traffic areas, their function in the motorized transport network is in focus of discussions and designs. This in despite to the fact that in the dense, urban context, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport move more people than car traffic and therefore require much less space.

At the same time, major urban roads also have important spatial and social functions.
They are prominent addresses and often important places of residence and work. They structure the centralities and thus secure the local supply with products and services. As representation spaces, they are the identity bearers and kind of "business card" of a city. They are a valuable element of the higher-level open-space framework and form the basis for orientation and wayfinding in the city. As spatial interfaces between neighborhoods, the main roads form important cross-linking and communication spaces. As such, they offer space for events and are meeting places and places to stay. Last but not least, locations on main roads are considered as priority development sites because of their good accessibility.

While many of Kyiv's historic main streets still have their original spatial conception under the various aspects (street oriented building facades, mixed-use etc.), due to the one-sided traffic-related consideration in recent decades they have become more and more assessed as "problematic" (by traffic planners) or even "space off" and "no-place" (by residents and urbanists).

To find a way out of such situations, in the organization and design of streets the multifunctionality of street spaces – including treatment of the adjacent buildings – should be considered stronger again. An integral view on urban issues and traffic aspects are required when analyzing street spaces. New priorities are to be given in street design. In the end of the day, rethinking of urban development and traffic planning is essential.
Aim and Objectives
To bring together representatives of various professions directly related to urban development:

Train a new generation of Ukrainian transport planners and urban planners in their work with contemporary principles of street space design that should improve urban streets to places where people move, meet and live.

Engage the participants in the process of envisioning possible futures of urban main streets in the city of Kyiv

Generate several alternative scenarios for the development of a particular street; and come up with recommendations for the city.
Participants
26 participants from all over Ukraine

10 participants — professionals from the fields Civil Engineering, Urban Design, Urban Planning and Architecture with 2 years of work experience in street design.

6 participants — representatives of city institutes, representatives of NGOs and executives of city administrations involved in mobility and urban development issues, as well as critical thinking researchers and professionals with background in Economics, Sociology, Political and Cultural Studies who are interested in the aspects of urban streets.
* A contingent of 12 people was foreseen to be participants from "Integrated Urban Development in Ukraine" partner cities. An additional contingent was reserved for participants proposed by Kyiv City Administration

Free (we do not cover accomodation and food expenses). Selection prosess is application based.

"With this Summer School we first of all wanted to treat this rather unpopular but important theme of urban main streets. Although it is a main issue in urban development, it is unfortunately hardly regarded by architects, urban designers and traffic planners as they are considered to be too complex. We want to emphasize the importance of the issue, make it more accessible and understandable and show that an overall urban revaluation of main streets is possible. With a collaboration between architects, urban designers and traffic planners we also wanted this Summer School to contribute to the paradigm shift in the treatment of streets and to emphasize the importance of an interdisciplinary, integral approach. We wanted to discuss, to show and to teach alternatives to the old-school, conventional one-sided technical transit traffic solutions for inner city main streets. Last but not least our idea was to put the issue not only in the focus of urban planners, architects and traffic engineers, but also on the political agenda. The fact that the city government is actually working on a traffic project for the Sherbakivskoho-Street made the case study especially interesting. We hope the three proposed concepts will help finding better and integral solutions for the street and at least trigger constructive discussions about the future of the street". — Urs Thomann, School curator.

"Working group consisted of people with different professional backgrounds from different cities of Ukraine. Due to multidisciplinary approach it was possible to obtain a varied views on the object of research, which was based not only on the assessment of the architectural and infrastructure components, but also on the social aspect. The professional expertise of participants from city municipalities played an important role in shaping of overall concept in the most rational way: object should be ease to implementation and ease to use. Thanks to architects and engineers, it was possible to develop well-designed solutions that included all the necessary measures to solve identified problems on the Shcherbakivskiy street ". — Andriy Koman, Assistant tutor.
